Can the soul feel pain?

Can a soul be tortured and brutalized? Pain is a particularly bodily phenomenon, it involves nerves, it involves tissue, it involves, most importantly, the brain. Please explain how a ghostly essence, separated from the body, can feel pain? Then how is the threat, "You will burn in hell." have any punch?
