Mitosis and Miosis?

I have a quiz tomorrow on mitosis and miosis- i get the jist of it, but my teacher said a big part of the quiz would be understanding the vocabulary. could you please help explain some of the vocabulary in understandable terms? - some that come to mind are synapsis (exchange of genetic info, right?), diploid and haploid numbers.. so on
